Many of the most common certifications are those recognized by standard bodies. In addition, the world today focuses on product produced using environmentally friendly procedures.

A primary concern for producers and retailers is still whether or not uncertified products can be sustainable and will sell in the available markets. The products along the Leather Value Chain needing urgent eco-friendly certification are: raw hides and skins from slaughter houses; pickled and tanned pellets; crust and finished leather and lastly the leather goods and footwear.

Eco-friendly leather products certification mark in line with global development of both processes and products will increase public trust and market accessibility of these products.

The current situation in Africa is that majority of the SMEs lack certification of their products and as such their products are less competitive both on the local and international markets.

Knowledge and appreciation of the applicable standards across the leather value chain as well as aspects of quality assurance in the leather sector is very critical and can only be achieved through the product certification process.

Standards are technical documents, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, which provide requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose.
